new job, new town, new haircut, and my fabulous new beginning

As I'm sitting here looking out over Pennsylvania Avenue, with a warm blueberry muffin half-eaten, a very large -- or should I say Venti -- iced caramel macchiato in hand and my favorite pandora station blasting through my headphones, and I've got to say that I've never felt more inspired.

Let me start out by introducing myself. My name is Brooke and I am 22. I am a North Carolina girl, born and raised, but recently made a big move up to Washington, DC -- so yes, I'm on THE Pennsylvania Avenue. This move came rather suddenly with not much thought or preparation. Before I explain how I ended up here, I'll need to rewind and go back to about mid June...

After graduating from College in May with a Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, I was excited to enter into the real world and start the next big chapter of my life. Already having a full time job as the Graphic Designer for a jewelry company, a wonderful relationship with my college boyfriend and plans to travel with my family throughout the summer, things were falling into place perfectly. You see, I'm a planner and a bit of a control freak, so naturally, I thought I had it all figured out. Well, after the most remarkable trip to Napa with my parents and College BF at the start of the summer, -- I will be sure to talk about this soon! -- I came home to notice that my plan may not have been so perfect after all. I love graphic design and I will always pursue it. But, I decided that the 9-5 desk job life, designing for 1 company, was not for me. After having this realization, I decided to apply to be a Flight Attendant. I know what you must be thinking and believe me, I've heard it all before. No, I have not always dreamed of being a Flight Attendant. No, I didn't spend 4 years in a very competitive design school with hopes of working in this industry. Yes, I love to fly. And you're right, I didn't put much thought into it. I initially applied because I felt stuck and I wanted to see what my other options were. I thought it would take weeks before I heard back and I would have had plenty of time to put some actual thought into my rash decision to send in the application. Well, it took all of 12 hours to get the phone interview, which then led to the face to face interview 2 weeks later, which is where I was hired that very day and told I would be sent to Phoenix to train for 5 weeks, 2 weeks after that. In those 4 weeks, my solid plan was out the window and I was about to embark on a journey that I hadn't prepared for. So there I went, newly single, -- I'll spare you the sob story -- with a shorter -- for me -- new hair-do, and 2 big suitcases stuffed full of outfits and shoes not suitable for the desert, off to Arizona to begin the REAL next chapter of my life.

And that, my Friends, is how I ended up nearly 2 months later in this charming city, sitting in this great little Starbucks on the corner of Pennsylvania and 3rd. I've got to tell you that this may be the first time I have really stopped to think about these recent events in my life.

I'm Brooke, and yes I'm a Flight Attendant. I'd like to think that my job is only a small part of who I am, though. I'll get to the rest very soon.

For now, I will continue to wander around and explore this new city that I am sure to get lost in more times than I will ever admit to.

Until next time...
